Nerve Testing

Diagnosing Diabetic Neuropathy with Nylon Filament Nerve Testing.

Your physician or podiatrist can do nerve testing. One form of nerve testing is the Sims Weinstein Nylon Filament Test. This is a simple inexpensive and non-painful way to check nerve function. This test can also be repeated at intervals. I recommend that it be repeated every six to twelve months. This test is a qualitative measurement light touch sensation. Vibratory testing, hot and cold, and nerve conduction velocity testing are also available.

We have included a nylon filament and testing procedure form so that you can do a screening test at your home in the booklet, Relief and Prevention by Dr. Craig McManama. You may be surprised to see that you do have numbness or more numbness in your feet than you expected. Thanks to McNeil Pharmaceutical, the makers of Regranex, a medication used to treat diabetic ulcerations, for their donation of these testing kits. Always report foot numbness to your doctor.
